If lifter pads are found to be worn during inspection, check the corresponding camshaft lobes or adjusting shims, as they may also be worn. Replace any worn lifter pads.

Disconnect the battery cable, then remove the valve cover and air intake duct.

If air is trapped, reinstall the rocker arm shaft assemblies and valve cover, and bleed the air from the lifters by running the engine at 1,000 rpm for about 10 minutes.

Remove the lifters from the cylinder head, keeping track of their original positions.

Inspect the contact and sliding surfaces of each lifter for wear and scratches. If the lifter pad is worn, it's advisable to check the corresponding camshaft lobe or adjusting shim on DOHC engines, as it will likely be worn too. Caution: On SOHC engines, do not lay the lifters on their side or upside down, as air can become trapped inside, requiring the lifter to be bled. Lifters can only be laid on their side if submerged in a pan of clean engine oil until reassembly.

Remove the lifters from the cylinder head, ensuring they are stored in order.

Lubricate the lifters with clean engine oil, then install the lifters and shims into their original locations.

Next, remove the timing chains and camshaft sprockets. For 2004 and later models, unbolt the camshaft position sensor from the rear end of each cylinder bank if necessary, ensuring the working end of the sensor does not touch metal after removal.

Next, remove the lifter guide assembly and take out the lifters from the bores one at a time, keeping them in order for reinstallation.
