Mark the camshaft bearing caps from 1 to 4, and with an "I" or an "E" to indicate intake or exhaust. Also, mark arrows indicating the front of the engine. Loosen the camshaft bearing caps in two or three steps, in the reverse order of the tightening sequence. Remove the bearing caps and the camshafts.

Engage the camshaft sprocket teeth with the timing chain links, align the match marks, and position the sprockets over the dowels on the camshaft hubs.

Calculating the oil clearance for each camshaft bearing by subtracting the journal's outside diameter from the bearing's inside diameter helps determine if the bearings are within specified clearance values. Deviations from these values may indicate the need to replace the camshaft, cylinder head, or both.

To remove the camshafts, remove the cylinder heads and gently pry off the camshaft cover plate. Use holding lugs to secure the camshaft while loosening the retaining bolt, and remove the bolt and thrust plate. Carefully pry out the camshaft oil seal without scratching or nicking the camshaft. Pull the camshaft out of the cylinder head using a twisting motion.

Inspect each lifter for scuffing and score marks, and check the oil clearance for each camshaft journal using Plastigage, replacing components if the clearance exceeds specifications.

Disconnect the electrical connectors at the camshaft position sensors and remove the sensors.

Subtract the outside diameter of each lifter from the inside diameter of the lifter bore and compare the difference to the clearance specified in this Chapter. If both the lifter and the bore are within acceptable limits, this measurement should fall within tolerance. However, if new parts such as lifters or the lifter guide assembly (SOHC) or the cylinder head (DOHC) have been changed, this clearance may no longer fall within the specified limit.

The camshafts and lifters should always be thoroughly inspected before installation, and camshaft endplay should be checked prior to removal.

Avoid laying the lifters on their side or upside down to prevent air from being trapped inside; they can only be laid on their side if submerged in clean engine oil.
