Apply moly-based engine assembly lubricant to the camshaft lobes and journals. Install the camshafts in their original positions with the dowel pins facing up and inline with the cylinder bank.

Inspect the lifters for wear while they are out of the engine.

Inspect lifter outside diameters with a micrometer and compare them to specifications. If any lifter is worn beyond specified limits, it should be replaced.

Retract and remove the left timing chain tensioner.

Check camshaft runout and endplay, replacing the camshaft or cylinder head if limits are exceeded.

Remove the timing chain cover-to-front camshaft bearing cap bolts and the front camshaft bearing cap-to-cylinder head bolts, using a plastic hammer if necessary to break the RTV sealant. Then, remove the camshafts, marking or storing them separately for their original locations.

The remainder of the installation follows the reverse order of removal, and if any part of the valve train was replaced, check and adjust the valve clearance.

Subtract the outside diameter of each lifter from the inside diameter of the lifter bore and compare the difference to the clearance specified in this Chapter. If both the lifter and the bore are within acceptable limits, this measurement should fall within tolerance. However, if new parts such as lifters or the lifter guide assembly (SOHC) or the cylinder head (DOHC) have been changed, this clearance may no longer fall within the specified limit.

If only the camshaft seals are being replaced, they can be done in-vehicle by removing the timing belt and camshaft sprockets, taking care not to damage the camshaft journal.

Remove the bearing caps and camshafts, noting the markings for correct placement. The intake camshaft will have a drill spot on the side of the sprocket mounting flange.

Install the bearing caps and bolts, tightening them in a specific sequence.
