Q:
How should the valve clearance be adjusted according to the manufacturer's recommendations on Nissan Murano? Posted by Customer
A:
According to the manufacturer the valve clearance should be checked and altered at the given interval only if the valve train is noisy. To start the process, remove the cable far away from the connection point of its negative terminal on the battery. Next, you have to take out the valve covers and spark plugs. Place the number 1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke and the timing marks as well. Check the clearance of the indicated valves with feeler gauge, and record the clearance, and check with standard valve clearance if which one is out of order for later repair. Rotate the crankshaft 240 degrees and then with the help of the feeler gauge read and tabulate the indicated valve clearances. Turn the crankshaft another 240 degrees and do the same for the rest of the valves. These engines do not employ valve adjusting shims, if some clearance is out of tolerance, the lifter must be replaced with a new lifter of different dimension to get the correct value. Take off the camshafts to gain access to the lifters; place a 'X' mark on those that you want to change and document which valve they belonged to. Using micrometer, take measurements on the thickness of the center of the lifter. To calculate the correct thickness of a replacement lifter that will place the valve clearance within the specified value, use the formula: N = T + A-V that represents the appropriate thickness of the new lifter, T as the thickness of the previous worn out lifter, A as the amount of valve clearance that was measured, and V as the ideal thickness of the valve clearance. Choose a lifter of an approximate thickness of the calculated valve clearance; lifters are stamped with their size on the bottom side. Identify and flag the new lifters for the particular lifters that are to be installed in your car's engine then apply engine assembly lube all over them then you install them. Once the lifters are changed, place the camshaft(s) back. The rest of the process is the opposite of the removal process; reattaching all the connections, including the battery, followed by the re-learn processes.
