The front wheel bearings must be checked and repacked. For this, you need to have jackstands that can support the vehicle safely, torque wrench, grease hammer, wood block, needle nose pliers, grease gun, socket/breaker bar hammer, screwdriver and brush. Put together again the hub assembly while for 2WD Frontier models follow specific procedures for tightening of spindle nut torque as follows; tighten the locknut to specified torques for 4WD Frontier models plus all Xterras & Pathfinders measuring wheel bearing preload adjust respectively according to need). Finish installments by performing reverse steps while ensuring proper torque of lugs nuts on wheels plus attachment of hub cap in place.

Check the axleshaft end play using a dial indicator. For four-cylinder, 2WD Frontier, and Xterra models, the end play should be 0.0008 to 0.0059 inches (0.02 to 0.15 mm), while for other models, the end play should be 0.0 inches (0.0 mm).

Proceed by removing the wheel, brake drum, and brake shoes. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the lever on the trailing shoe and unbolt the cable casing from the backing plate. Additionally, disconnect the hydraulic line fitting from the wheel cylinder.

Pry out the axleshaft oil seal using a seal removal tool. Then, use a seal installer to drive in the new axleshaft oil seal. Make sure to wipe the bore in the axle housing clean before proceeding.
