Reinstall the rocker arm shaft assemblies and valve cover, then bleed air from the lifters by running the engine at 1,000 rpm under no load for about 10 minutes. Afterward, remove the valve cover and rocker arm shaft assemblies again, and repeat the plunger check. If air remains, replace the lifter.

Install the camshafts in their original positions with the dowel pins facing up and inline with the cylinder bank.

Measure the outside diameter of each camshaft bearing journal and record your measurements. Compare them to the journal outside diameter specified in this Chapter. Then measure the inside diameter of each corresponding camshaft bearing and record the measurements. Subtract each cam journal outside diameter from its respective cam bearing bore inside diameter to determine the oil clearance for each bearing. Compare the results to the specified journal-to-bearing clearance. If any measurements fall outside the standard specified wear limits, either the camshaft or the cylinder head, or both, must be replaced.
