Make sure that the camshafts and Lash Adjusters go through a thorough inspection, and check the camshaft endplay before removing them. To begin with, remove the battery cable, valve cover, and air intake duct. The engine should be positioned at TDC for cylinder one by marking the timing chain links and sprockets for future use with other markings on those sprockets such as "I" (intake) and "E" (exhaust). With the sprocket bolts of camshaft slightly loosened while keeping them in place using a wrench to maintain their alignments with "TDC" marks on crankshaft pulley. Remove sprocket retaining bolts, timing chain disengaged, and finally take out camshaft sprockets. Proceed to loosen and remove the camshaft bearing caps while keeping them in order. After lifting them mark I or E in addition to knowing how they will be used again in the future. Take off each Lash Adjuster placing it together with its respective shim inside a bag which is labeled or marked box. In case there are new cams being installed one should apply moly-based engine assembly lubricant on them then fit them into the cylinder head. Tighten bearing caps and bolts down according to a specific order. Combine timing chain links with those teeth of camshaft sprocket; match marks must follow while installing these sprockets over dowels on those hubs of camshaft then fix the bolts of these camshafts' sprockets in place. Make sure that these gears match up properly with each of these camshafts resulting in tightening these sprocket bolts as indicated by their torques. After that, reverse steps taken during its removal process so as to complete installation.

To remove the camshafts, remove the cylinder heads and gently pry off the camshaft cover plate. Use holding lugs to secure the camshaft while loosening the retaining bolt, and remove the bolt and thrust plate. Carefully pry out the camshaft oil seal without scratching or nicking the camshaft. Pull the camshaft out of the cylinder head using a twisting motion.

Apply a bead of RTV sealant to the sealing surfaces of the No. 1 bearing cap(s) and the cylinder head. Install new O-rings on the secondary timing chain tensioner(s) and the VVT oil control orifice on the No. 1 bearing cap(s).

When inspecting, examine lifter bore diameters and lifter-to-guide clearances, comparing the results to specifications. If bore wear exceeds specified limits, replace lifter guide assemblies (3.3L engines) or cylinder heads (2.4L and 3.5L engines).

Remove the lifters from the cylinder head, ensuring they are stored in order.

Remove the timing chain cover-to-front camshaft bearing cap bolts and the front camshaft bearing cap-to-cylinder head bolts, using a plastic hammer if necessary to break the RTV sealant. Then, remove the camshafts, marking or storing them separately for their original locations.

Loosen the camshaft bearing caps in reverse order of tightening, keeping them in order for reinstallation.

Disengage the camshaft sprockets from the timing chains and support them with wire to prevent falling into the timing chain cover.

Next, remove the lifter guide assembly and take out the lifters from the bores one at a time, keeping them in order for reinstallation.

Apply a bead of RTV sealant to the sealing surfaces of the No. 1 bearing cap(s), then install the bearing caps and bolts, tightening them hand tight before tightening the bearing cap bolts in several steps to the specified torque.

Measure the outside diameter of each lifter with a micrometer and compare it to the specifications in this Chapter. If any lifter is worn beyond the specified limit, replace it.
