Inspect lifter outside diameters with a micrometer and compare them to specifications. If any lifter is worn beyond specified limits, it should be replaced.

If air is trapped, reinstall the rocker arm shaft assemblies and valve cover, and bleed the air from the lifters by running the engine at 1,000 rpm for about 10 minutes.

Disconnect the battery cable, then remove the valve cover and air intake duct.

Apply RTV sealant to the sealing surfaces of the No. 1 bearing cap(s) and install new O-rings on the secondary timing chain tensioner(s).

Check the endplay with a dial indicator and replace components if measurements exceed specified limits.

Remove the variable valve timing valve(s) from the top of the number one camshaft journal(s).

Measure camshaft journal diameter and lobe height, replacing the camshaft if any measurements are below specifications.

Mark the positions of the camshaft bearing caps with an "I" for intake or "E" for exhaust, and indicate the front of the engine.

Install the camshafts in their original positions with the dowel pins facing up and inline with the cylinder bank.

For camshaft removal, take off the cylinder heads, then remove the bolts and gently pry off the camshaft cover plate at the transaxle end.

Inspect the contact and sliding surfaces of each lifter for wear and scratches. If the lifter pad is worn, it's advisable to check the corresponding camshaft lobe or adjusting shim on DOHC engines, as it will likely be worn too. Caution: On SOHC engines, do not lay the lifters on their side or upside down, as air can become trapped inside, requiring the lifter to be bled. Lifters can only be laid on their side if submerged in a pan of clean engine oil until reassembly.
