The camshafts and lifters should always be thoroughly inspected before installation, and camshaft endplay should be checked prior to camshaft removal.

The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. If any part of the valve train was replaced, check and adjust the valve clearance.

If air is trapped, reinstall the rocker arm shaft assemblies and valve cover, and bleed the air from the lifters by running the engine at 1,000 rpm for about 10 minutes.

Disconnect the battery cable, then remove the valve cover and air intake duct.

When inspecting the camshaft lobes, measure the camshaft lobe height with a micrometer and compare it to the specified cam lobe height. Calculate wear, and if wear exceeds specified limits, replace the camshaft.

Proceed to remove the timing chains and camshaft sprockets. For models without exhaust timing control, remove the variable intake valve timing valves from the top of the number one camshaft journals.

Mark the camshaft bearing caps from 1 to 4, indicating intake or exhaust with an "I" or "E," and mark arrows to show the front of the engine.

Subtract the outside diameter of each lifter from the inside diameter of the lifter bore and compare the difference to the clearance specified in this Chapter. If both the lifter and the bore are within acceptable limits, this measurement should fall within tolerance. However, if new parts such as lifters or the lifter guide assembly (SOHC) or the cylinder head (DOHC) have been changed, this clearance may no longer fall within the specified limit.

After installation, use a seal installation tool or appropriate diameter pipe to press the new seal squarely into the cylinder head until it bottoms out.
