Q:
How do you remove and install the Steering Knuckle on Nissan Quest? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the driveaxle, start by taking off the center cap and unstaking the driveaxle/hub nut using a chisel and hammer; if the nut is inaccessible, install the spare tire onto the hub. Next, use a breaker bar and socket to loosen the driveaxle/hub nut. Loosen the wheel lug nuts slightly, raise the front of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands before removing the wheel and the driveaxle/hub nut. Remove the brake caliper and brake disc, and disconnect the brake hose from the strut. If equipped with ABS, disconnect and remove the wheel speed sensor. Loosen the strut-to-steering knuckle nuts without removing the bolts, then separate the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle arm. Remove the cotter pin and loosen the balljoint stud nut, backing it off as far as it will go without removing it. Use a "picklefork" type balljoint separator to separate the balljoint stud from the steering knuckle, ensuring to grease the picklefork to protect the balljoint dust boot. Separate the control arm from the steering knuckle by prying it down with a prybar or large screwdriver. Press the driveaxle from the hub, pull the steering knuckle away from the vehicle, and withdraw the driveaxle stubshaft from the hub splines, supporting the end of the driveaxle with a section of wire. Remove the strut-to-knuckle bolts to separate the knuckle from the strut, and if necessary, remove the steering stop bolt from the knuckle, marking the threads for alignment. For installation, guide the knuckle and hub assembly into position, inserting the driveaxle into the hub. Push the knuckle into the strut flange and install the bolts and nuts without tightening them yet. Attach the control arm to the steering knuckle, tighten the balljoint stud nut to the specified torque, and insert a new cotter pin. Attach the tie-rod end to the steering knuckle arm, then tighten the strut-to-knuckle nuts to the specified torque. Place the brake disc on the hub and install the caliper, then install the wheel speed sensor if equipped and connect the brake hose to the strut. Install the driveaxle/hub nut and tighten it securely but not completely yet. If removed, install the steering stop bolt and tighten the jam nut to the specified torque. Install the wheel and tighten the lug nuts without torquing them yet, then lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel lug nuts and the driveaxle/hub nut to the specified torque.
