Q:
How to the remove and install of the steering gear on Nissan Maxima? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the rack and pinion, park the vehicle with the wheels straight and disconnect the negative battery cable, along with the positive cable on airbag-equipped models, waiting 10 minutes before proceeding. For 2003 and earlier models, remove the air filter housing, intake duct, and charcoal canister with its bracket. Detach the steering shaft universal joint cover from the firewall, marking the relationship of the universal joint to the rack and pinion input shaft, then remove the lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt. Avoid turning the steering wheel while the rack and pinion is removed; if it turns, center the clock spring. Secure the steering wheel with a seat belt to prevent movement. Place a drain pan under the rack and pinion, detach the power steering lines, and cap the ends. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and remove the wheels and engine splash shields. Separate the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckle arms, remove the stabilizer bar, and the center cross member from under the engine. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts, separate the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion input shaft, and maneuver the rack and pinion assembly out. Check the rubber mounts for wear. For 2004 and later models, remove the rearward bolts from the stabilizer bar clamps, loosen the front bolts, and detach the outer ends. Follow the previous steps to access the rack and pinion mounting bolts, remove them, and take out the rack and pinion. For installation, guide the rack and pinion into position, connect the U-joint, and align the marks. For 2001 and earlier models, install the mounting clamps and bolts, tightening them in sequence, and install the shield over the right side mount. For 2002 and 2003 models, install the mounting bolts and clamp, tightening in two stages. For 2004 models, install and tighten the rack and pinion mounting bolts and stabilizer bar mounting bolts. Connect the tie-rod ends to the steering knuckle arms, install the engine splash shields, wheels, and lug nuts, then lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts. Install the U-joint pinch bolt and tighten it, then connect the power steering lines and fill the reservoir with the recommended fluid. Finally, install the charcoal canister and air filter housing and duct, and bleed the steering system.
